Refugee Week Scotland, which started on 12 June, is a festival of arts, culture and education. The Scottish Refugee Council’s theme this year is spirit: the spirit of survival and the individual; community spirit; and Scotland’s spirit.

Aberdeen plans to transform primary football and help produce more future Scotland stars. Primary teams in the city currently play 11-a-side and nine-a-side, one of the few remaining areas in Scotland to do so. From August and the new football season, the city council will be endorsing smaller-sided football as part of the SFA’s national pathway from five to 12 years old.

Music

Pupils from St Angela’s Primary in Glasgow have been making music for Malawi. All proceeds from their song Miles Apart - already on sale as a download from Amazon and iTunes - will go to the Mary’s Meals charity. The aim is to feed at least 60 children in Malawi for a year.

Literacy

Looked-after children in Edinburgh are to receive a new book every month, up to the age of five, as part of a scheme to support children in the council’s care. The books will be posted to them each month, to help them build up their own library. The initiative is part of the Dolly Parton Imagination Library scheme, sponsored by the Scottish government.

Pupils at Kincaidston Primary in Ayr got their hands on three of golf’s big trophies last week, while the pioneer of golf, Old Tom Morris (portrayed by actor and golf historian David Joy), told them tales of his early wins. The Amateur Championship Trophy, the Open Championship Trophy and the Senior Open Championship Trophy are visiting Ayrshire schools as the area gears up to host the Amateur Championship and the Senior Open Championship this summer.
