Outdoor Education
- Youngsters are being offered the chance to get out and about in central Scotland through the Great Outdoors Festival 2012, running from the beginning of September in Stirling and East and West Dunbartonshire. The festival, which takes place in the Campsie Fells, Kilpatrick Hills, Trossachs and all the bits in between, offers walks, rides and paddles led by experienced guides knowledgeable about local history and wildlife.

Music
- Millions of pounds have been earmarked by Creative Scotland for investment in music-making opportunities for people aged up to 25. The body recently announced the launch of the Scottish government’s pound;10 million Youth Music Investment programme. There are three programmes available through which organisations and individuals can apply for investment, including school-based music-making. For more information, visit bit.lyNA2csE

- As part of the launch of the new website Ready for Emergencies, which aims to make Scottish pupils more resilient, schools are being invited to take part in a poster competition to create pictures for use in a calendar. The calendar aims to communicate the importance of preparing for emergencies. See bit.lyONWQIe

Maths
- The Edinburgh International Book Festival has also factored in maths this year. On 20 August, Kjartan Poskitt hopes to astonish his audience with number tricks and fabulous flexagons and on 21 August, David Acheson will demonstrate mind-reading tricks. www.edbookfest.co.uk
Keeping it real
Drama
- Pupils from two Edinburgh schools plan to bring some gritty realism to this year’s Festival Fringe with a performance of John Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men. The production is by pupils from Merchiston and St George’s schools. Performances will run from 20 to 22 August at theSpace @ Niddry Street.
