- Pupils have been challenged to capture “the power of the sea” in a junior photography competition based on the waters around Scotland. It is being run under the auspices of the Saltire Prize for marine energy technology and will be judged by photographer David Eustace in three categories: primary, S1-3 and S4-6.

Britannica back

Cross-curricular

- Every school in Scotland will get free access to cross-curricular digital resources via the new Britannica Online School Edition. Encyclopaedia Britannica is marking its transition to a purely digital educational publisher. It announced the end of the iconic print set in March. www.britannica.co.ukeducation

SQA award

Cooperative studies

- Loudoun Academy in East Ayrshire is to become the first Scottish School of Cooperation, in a link-up with the Co-operative Society. The feeder primaries include Fenwick, the village which claims to have founded the first cooperative enterprise - the Fenwick Weavers - in 1761. Twelve Loudoun pupils will be the first in Scotland to gain a new SQA award in Cooperative Studies at Intermediate 2 level.

Glow Meets

- The National Records of Scotland has launched its 2012-13 series of free workshops and Glow Meet sessions for schools. New topics include “What is the Census?” and “Newhaven Families”.

Den for doers

Enterprise

- Stow College in Glasgow has become the first in Scotland to sign up to the Peter Jones Enterprise Academy, run by Dragons’ Den star Peter Jones. The college will be the Scottish hub for the academy, which bases its courses on a philosophy of learning by doing.
