Heart work
Health
- The British Heart Foundation Scotland is encouraging schools, nurseries and youth groups to sign up to one of its fundraising, sporting initiatives for children aged 3 to 8: Artie’s Olympics, Jump Rope For Heart or Ultimate Dodgeball. The scheme allows schools and nurseries to keep 20 per cent of money raised. Visit bhf.org.ukeveryonewins
Gaelic materials
Languages
- New materials have been released for the Gaelic early-years sector, including a variety of books, posters, CDs and games. They were commissioned by Bord na Gaidhlig and produced by Acair and Storlann. Mary MacMillan, head of education and learning, said this was an “important step forward” as there had previously been few resources for the 0-3 age group.
Safety first
Well-being
- The recruitment of primary pupils as “junior road safety officers” has become a central part of the effort to make South Lanarkshire roads less dangerous. This year, 118 schools are taking part in the scheme, with 102 having attended an event organised by the council to watch a film explaining the role. Officers’ duties are: maintaining a notice board; running competitions; highlighting road safety campaigns; and speaking at assemblies. See
