A good heart
Science
- A pupil from Deans Community High, West Lothian, has won the British Heart Foundation competition to build a pumping human heart from household items. Nicole Serzhantova, 16, used sponge and plastic bottles for her model of the lungs and heart. Runners-up were a group of 13-year-olds from Vale of Leven Academy who used plastic tubs and bottles.

Art
- The Edinburgh Festival Fringe is inviting schools to submit posters showing what the Fringe means to them. The competition is open to all pupils aged 5-16 and ends on 15 March. The winning design will become the official festival poster, with prizes of up to #163;750 for the top three artists and their schools. www.edfringe.composter

Environment
- An anti-litter campaign began in Highland this week. The Schools and Community Ownership for Pride in our Environment campaign includes 10 secondaries and is funded by Zero Waste Scotland. For one week, community volunteers and council staff will reward pupils with tokens for each use of bins outside school grounds and enter winning schools in a prize draw.

- A Loretto Golf Academy pupil has won the prestigious Hong Kong Schools Holiday golf competition. Lou Tag, 12, who lives in Hong Kong but boards at the Edinburgh school, achieved an impressive score of 58 at Hong Kong Golf Club. He went on to become runner-up at the Hong Kong Golf Association Winter Junior Championship 2012.

Outdoor Learning
- S2s at Glenwood High in Glenrothes will be able to use bungee cords, cooking stoves and tents when improving their personal development in an outdoor learning elective. The equipment, worth #163;2,000, was donated by local car dealership Fife SEAT. The pupils showed off their new skills in a photoshoot, building shelters, carrying out woodland first aid and making hot drinks.
