Garnetbank Primary in Glasgow has won 1,500 from charity Global Action Plan for growing its own food. Pupils nurtured seeds beginning with each letter, to help dyslexic children practise the alphabet, planted wheat for bread, held a sunflower-growing competition and organised an open afternoon to show off their garden.

Enterprise

Pupils at Broadford Primary in Skye have produced a CD as part of an enterprise project to help peers and adults learn the times tables while practising Gaelic language skills. The 18-track CD, Spors le uireadan - fun with times tables, features singing from 12 of the school’s pupils, accompanied by musicians from Plockton’s National Centre for Traditional Music. broadford.primary@highland.gov.uk

Drama

Primary and secondary pupils are being invited to write a one-act play for performers of 11 years and under, or for an audience of 12 to 16-year- olds. Winning entries to the competition will each receive a prize of 1,000 and their plays will be performed at a London theatre. www.trinitycollege.co.ukplaywriting

Shortlist named

Environment

The shortlist of schools competing for the 2011 Junior Saltire Award has been announced. The award aims to raise awareness among young people of developments within marine renewables in Scotland. P5-7 and S1-S3 pupils had to design a model illustrating their ideas for tidal stream energy in Scottish waters. Shortlisted schools include Brora Primary in Highland and Dundee’s Braeview Academy.

Pupils from Borders primary schools met in Galashiels last month to share their experiences from this year’s Champions in Schools programme. The project places Scotland’s top athletes in classrooms to deliver workshops on healthy lifestyles and develop a positive winning attitude. Football’s John Collins and athletics’ Libby Clegg took part in a Qamp;A session at the event.
