Education secretary Michael Russell and Aberdeen FC manager Craig Brown have unveiled healthy vending machines at two Scottish schools as part of the British Heart Foundation’s Food4Thought campaign. Mr Russell unveiled the machine at Dunoon Grammar, while Mr Brown visited Oldmachar Academy. The pilot aims to encourage pupils to eat healthier snacks and meals.
New tartan
Enterprise
Pupils of Mount Vernon Primary in Shettleston have revealed their new, specially designed school tartan. The light blue, navy blue, red, white and black tartan was created as part of a P67 enterprise project, and is now officially registered on the Scottish register for tartans. At their Burns supper, pupils were able to model the design for the first time.

Gaelic
Storlann, the Gaelic organisation that produces educational resources for the Gaelic medium sector, has appointed Donald Morrison as its new chief executive. He has worked for Bord na Gaidhlig for the past eight years, latterly overseeing the development of the Gaelic language plans of public bodies. Storlann also hosts the Gaelic 4Parents website to assist in homework.

Dunbar SciFest, organised by Dunbar Primary school parent council, is extending its reach to pupils in Edinburgh, the Lothians and Borders this year. Having started off as a half-day event, it has now become a two-day science extravaganza and hopes to expand even further in 2013. This year’s event will be held on 10-11 March at Dunbar Primary, East Lothian.

Environmental
Pupils in Moray have collected a remarkable 7.5 tons of old and unwanted electrical goods in a council initiative to reduce waste. Pupils and staff took items into school which were then counted, weighed and removed by the council’s monitoring team. Glenlivet Primary collected the most weight per pupil - over 700kg in total.
