East Dunbartonshire will be the first local authority in Scotland to introduce Penfriend technology for visually-impaired people to all its libraries. The book information is activated when the labels are touched by the tip of the Penfriend, allowing the library user to listen to the title, author, book and synopsis.

Burns bairns

POETRY

Fin Campbell, 8, from Crieff Primary, has won first prize in the P1-4 category of the annual Tesco Burns poetry competition for her version of Robert Burns’ Address to a Haggis. The winner of the P5-7 category was Erin Ronald, 11, from Carntyne Primary in Glasgow. They each receive a pound;50 Tesco gift card and a pound;200 cheque for their school.

Wider festival

SCIENCE

Fife Science Festival, 9-18 March, has been extended to Dunfermline, with events also heading to St Andrews, Buckhaven, Burntisland, Glenrothes, Tayport and Kirkcaldy. A science week will be held at Denbeath Primary in Buckhaven, with engineering events at Adam Smith College in Glenrothes and wireless wonders at the Museum of Communication, Burntisland. Secondary pupils will get the chance to make a prize-winning robot.

Money matters

MUSEUMS

The Museum on the Mound in Edinburgh is inviting people to take a fresh look at money with a new, free interdisciplinary resource called Beads, Bawbees and Banknotes. It explores money in all its shapes and forms and can be adapted for any age group or ability.
