Thinking about the problem of incessant political tinkering - including, recently, with the primary curriculum - isn’t it time the teaching profession used its best school- marm skills and declared enough is enough?

I have a suggestion. Put together a cross-party campaign calling for a “duty of sustainability” on education ministers and civil servants. Each new initiative would have to be accompanied by a long-term (say 20-year) projection of activity and impact, including a five-year consultation and development phase.

All guidance and requirements would have to be published a minimum of 18 months prior to nationwide implementation.

With timescales that went beyond any single parliament or school year, the debate would shift towards serious evaluation of educational effectiveness and away from the short-term ambitions of monarch-for-a-day ministers.
