UNITED STATES: Up to 90 lstudents in Buffalo, New York state, are expected to be paid $5 (pound;3.50) an hour for attending summer school. The idea is to help children from deprived families choose school over summer jobs. This year’s selected 14 to 16-year-olds will make $375 for the summer, attending classfor 15 hours a week over five weeks.

Some students in Philadelphia were paid for attending accelerated classes at local colleges and universities last summer, but the Buffalo programme is believed to be the first time American students have been paid to go to conventional summer school.
