At least 168 Birmingham heads were forced to close their schools on Tuesday, after support staff went on strike. The unions Unison, GMB and Unite estimated that up to 7,000 staff took part. They said Birmingham’s new pay and grading structure for staff, including teaching assistants, dinner ladies and janitors, was unfair. Councillor Alan Rudge said low-paid staff would benefit and talks would continue.
