I would like to clarify your report on the support I get at the General Teaching Council (“Part-time Puttnam enjoys pound;70k office”, TES, March 30).

My work as chairman is supported by my own permanent office with several staff devoting most of their time to supporting my GTC activities. I do not maintain a separate office there.

The financial arrangements put in place by the Government to supportmy role came after detailed discussion and have been independently audited and agreed.

I have devoted the vast majority of my time over the past three years to raising the status of the teaching profession. I believe passionately in this ambition, which lies at the heart of what the GTC was established to achieve.
