Twice as many people registered an interest in training as a teacher last term compared to the same period last year, according to the latest figures released by the Department for Education and Employment.

The DFEE said that 34,000 people had registered an interest with the Teacher Training Agency last term, in comparison with 17,000 the previous year.

Since the start of the new advetising campaign for teaching the TTA had received 14,000 enquiries.

Solving the recruitment crisis was a question of “converting expressions of interest into applications”, school standards minister Estelle Morris said last week at the North of England education conference.

The TTA hotline received more than 2,500 calls on the first two working days of 2001, Ms Morris said.
