Manga workshops, puppet shows and the chance to learn how to write a ghost story will be on offer at Surrey County Council’s first children’s book festival next week, organised to encourage children to develop a love of reading.

Justin Somper, author of the Vampirates series about the adventures of separated twins Connor and Grace Tempest, will open the festival on March 4 at The Magna Carta School, Egham.

Other events include a Gruffalo party, cartoon workshops with Tony De Saulles, the illustrator of the Horrible Science series, a Burglar Bill puppet show and performance poetry from Charlie Dark.

The festival is sponsored by the Department of English at Surrey University. Events will run throughout March in the Elmbridge, Runnymede and Spelthorne areas. HW.
