In the wake of publication of the post-Dearing geography Order, the Geographical Association has worked rapidly to produce a range of support materials for teachers. A small selection follows.
Recognising that teachers have found it difficult to develop suitable school plans from the revised national curriculum, Wendy Morgan, junior vice-president at the GA, provides adaptable study plans for key stage 1-2 in Plans for Primary Geography. Topics include: exploring our school buildings, stories from around the world and investigating a nearby locality. Pounds 6, Pounds 4 GA members.
In the crammed primary curriculum, it is essential for teachers to know what are examples of best practice and how to develop their own resources. Developments in Primary Geography: theory and practice, based on lectures and workshops given at the 1994 GA conference, helps lay the groundwork. Local distinctiveness, language and stories, conservation and distant places are all covered with worksheet forms and planning diagrams. Pounds 7.50, Pounds 5 members.
Geography and Science: forging links at key stage 3 develops nine “Aspects” of collaboration such as skills and technique; sequence and progression; equipment; and assessment into a framework for curriculum planning. They are illustrated by examples drawn from schools. Pounds 13.50, Pounds 9 members.
Using IT to Enhance Geography: case studies at key stages 3 and 4 is a compilation of activities undertaken during a geographyIT support project the GA carried out in 1994-95 with the National Council for Educational Technology, funded by a government Grant for Educational Support and Training. To help teachers in their assessment of pupil progress, the GA’s assessment and examinations working group has compiled a handbook entitled Assessment Works: approaches to assessment in geography at key stages 1, 2 and 3. Pounds 6, Pounds 4 members.
The GA is making available class sets of 15 copies of its Images of Earth remote sensing packs, which were originally designed as a teacher’s resource for self-study and Inset. Images include: Mount St Helens, USA, Kano, Nigeria, Castries, St Lucia, and the San Francisco Bay area. Each set costs Pounds 9, Pounds 6 members.
