Over in North Lanarkshire, they’re thinking of giving every pupil a suitably-inscribed millennium T-shirt. The council’s educational motto “Aiming Higher in North Lanarkshire” may prove to be a bit of a mouthful for the smaller backs, but we’re sure the authority is awash with the necessary inspiration.

No, being North Lanarkshire, the main issue is inevitably the colour of the T-shirts. In a spirit of ecumenism, education vice-convener Tommy Morgan suggested at the last committee that they should be made of green and blue. “Just as long as they’re not made by Umbro,” commented councillor Peter Sullivan, referring to the reccent exposure of poor quality in some replica Celtic strips.
