More than half of children in some areas of the UK are starting school without the basic language abilities to learn and make friends, says the charity I Can. A telephone poll of 1,004 adults showed only 32 per cent spent more than two hours a day talking to the children in their families.

The charity’s Make Chatter Matter campaign highlights the importance of developing children’s communication skills during early years.
