Carol Fox, Scottish official of the National Association of Schoolteachers Union of Women Teachers and fresh from the front page of the Daily Record where she proudly espoused her views on single parenthood, has turned her attentions to politics.

Fox is bidding for the St Jude’s Prize for Lost Causes, namely trying to prise Edinburgh West out of Liberal Democrat or Tory hands and into Labour’s grasp. To add spice, Educational Institute of Scotland activist Graham Sutherland is standing for the SNP.

More interesting, perhaps, is the presence on the Scottish Socialist top-up list for Lothian of Colin Fox. Such is the new electoral system, Mr Fox may stand a better chance of a Pew on the Mound than Ms Fox. He will no doubt pass on brotherly commiserations in due course.
