ITALY: Teachers are to be able to deduct the cost of books from income tax to encourage more people to read. Recent surveys have shown that more than 50 per cent of Italians have not read a single book over the past year. Walter Veltroni, the culture minister, said that teachers are “the first link in the chain, since they have the ability to transmit the passion for reading to young people”.
