I cannot accept that the lower tax relief afforded to National Union of Teachers’ members “only came to light” as a result of a TES investigation. I raised this issue last October with my NUT representative.
I gave him a reply I had received from the Inland Revenue which stated that tax relief on my Association of Teachers and Lecturers’ subscription was 90 per cent but only 66 per cent when I switched to the NUT. I understand it was discussed at the NUT’s executive meetings last November and December.
