A pound;15 million fund to offer training to parents in the skills required to bring up their children has been launched by the Government.

Grants of up to pound;350,000 will be targeted at groups such as ethnic minority families and fathers who traditionally have less support available to them, said Margaret Hodge, the children’s minister.

The National Family and Parenting Institute will distribute the money, known as the Parenting Fund, over two years to families in England. Mrs Hodge said: “Good parenting in the home has a greater impact on a child’s attainment than any other factor.

“Most parents turn first to family or friends for support but may need extra help. We need to make sure that support is available to parents, when and where they need it.”
