A former primary school teacher has won the UK’s biggest children’s book prize for his tale of a boy who discovers his teachers are pirates. Paul Stewart won the gold medal with illustrator Chris Riddell at the 20th annual Nestle Smarties Book Prize for the fantasy adventure Fergus Crane.

TES books editor Geraldine Brennan was one of the judges.
