CANADA: Alarmed by recent shootings in the United States and numerous incidents across Canada in which students were found to be carrying weapons, teachers in British Columbia have called for security checks of students transferring from other schools.
David Chudnovski, president of the British Columbia Teachers Federation, said: “There s a widespread feeling (among teachers) that they need to have confidence that their classrooms are safe.” They want checks of students who may be transferring from one school to another because of behaviour problems.
Civil rights groups warned that such a move would violate students’ rights to privacy.
