TEACHERS tuning into the world’s first television channel for the profession can expect hours of how-to programmes filmed around schools.
A mock broadcast from the Government-funded digital station, working title Teachers’ TV or TTV, was screened to teachers, celebrities and The TES last week.
Programmes included Tricks of the Trade, which featured teaching tips, Help! - a guide for teachers who have difficulties with computers - and Answering Back, a debate-style show on educational issues.
The Department for Education and Skills hopes teachers will tune into the channel in their own time, as well as at school, when pilots begin later this year.
Maria Heron and Richard Smith, of Trafalgar junior school in Twickenham, rubbed shoulders with broadcasters and celebrities such as Stephen Fry, a former teacher, at the event.
Both were impressed by early TTV and looked forward to videoing the channel for classroom resources and training material. Neither plans to watch it at home.
Mr Smith, aged 51, said: “After a long day in the classroom I am not going to switch over from Friends or Top Of the Pops.”
Industry insiders estimate TTV will cost the Government around pound;10 million a year.
