A teacher who was caught shoplifting twice has been suspended from teaching for two years.

Kevin Kearns, who taught at Winton boys’, in Bournemouth, was found guilty of unacceptable professional conduct by England’s General Teaching Council.

In 2004, Mr Kearns was arrested for stealing pound;15 of food from a supermarket.

After he had been released on bail, he failed to surrender himself into custody.

On January 6 2005, East Dorset magistrates gave him a conditional discharge after he pleaded guilty to those offences.

Mr Kearns had previously committed a shoplifting offence on May 15 2004, and received a police caution from Wiltshire constabulary.

Karen Cork, presenting officer, said: “Mr Kearns was arrested for shoplifting twice in a short period of time.

“He failed to tell his headteacher and he has failed to attend this hearing to give an explanation or show remorse for his actions.”

In a statement read out at the hearing, Ingrid Masters, headteacher at Winton boys’, said: “Mr Kearns had a professional obligation to inform me of any convictions or cautions.”

Mr Kearns was not legally represented at the hearing.
