May I respectfully point out that not all PGCEs are based in higher education institutions and not all school-run training is employment-based. I run, with a group of highly skilled practicing teachers, a school-based PGCE, and its outcomes are outstanding. And I disagree with the editor’s sarcasm about the “craft” of teaching. One of the best books I have read about teaching is Michael Marland’s The Craft of the Classroom. Not a blue-sky thought contained within.
