Teaching values versus imparting knowledge

I agree with Claire Fox that teachers should be more concerned with the transmission of knowledge than propagandising "right-on" attitudes but I disagree that we should be indifferent to how our children turn out.

As an experienced sixth-form tutor, I would be disappointed if my students didn't bother to vote or joined the British National Party. Before children can develop intellectual independence and moral autonomy they must be trained by knowledgeable teachers to engage in the variety of ethical issues debated on Radio 4's Moral Maze, where Ms Fox is a contributor.
