Tracknavchallenge asks pupils aged 14-18 to work in teams of four to six to design and build a radio-controlled 4-wheel drive vehicle that can emulate a full-sized Land Rover.

Besides being a mechanical and electronic challenge, teams are expected to develop support materials, such as a portfolio, a financial statement showing how they have managed a budget of pound;175 and a 2-3D display. They will also have to make a presentation to a panel of judges.

The ultimate experience is for the team to drive their vehicle, adhering to Land Rover’s “tread lightly” principles, over a model indoor track that tests the vehicle’s 4 x 4 capability to the maximum.

The competition is being launched with the support of the Scottish Qualifications Authority, which is sponsoring the first five Scottish t eams to register.
