The Scottish Council for Educational Technology is determined to broaden the appeal of its showcase biennial conference to attract non-specialist teachers and emphasise learning rather than technology itself.

The theme of the third Tactics and Trends conference, which takes place on November 13-14 at the Edinburgh International Conference Centre, is “lifelong learning in a wired world”. Among the speakers will be Bill Gates, head of the Microsoft software empire, who will appear electronically from his company offices in Seattle.

By moving the conference to Edinburgh from Glasgow’s Royal Concert Hall, which has been the venue since 1992, the council will be able to mount the largest information technology exhibition outside London, attracting up to 3,000 visitors.

The show will incorporate the annual exhibition of technology for special educational needs.
