This spectacular time-lapse picture raises all kinds of issues about travel, tourism and the environment.

Travel Did you travel by air during your holidays? Why did you take a plane? Was it quicker, cheaper, more convenient? How are plane crashes avoided (air traffic control, radar,‘corridors’, planes circling until it is safe to land)? What would you do (and why) if you lived underneath these aeroplane flightpaths?

Landmarks Where is this bridge and why is it famous (Tower Bridge in London, lifts up so ships can pass)? What are other famous London landmarks (Big Ben, Buckingham Palace, Trafalgar Square)? Can you think of other famous landmarks, like the Eiffel Tower, Blackpool Tower, Leaning Tower of Pisa, Statue of Liberty, Great Wall of China (only human-made landmark which can be seen from Space).

Time-lapse photography What is’time-lapse’ photography (taking a photo from a fixed place every few seconds or minutes)? How can it be used (in photographs to show all these aircraft, or a golf swing; in filmto show a flower opening, achild growing)?

Writing Write a story about this picture called ‘The Invasion’, eg: ‘Jenny and Michael heard a growing roar above their heads. The sky filled with hundreds of planes. Who was in them and where had they come from?’ Ted Wragg is professor ofeducation at Exeter University
