A DVD showing the realities of teen parenthood has been lauded by the Scottish Executive as good practice in the battle to reduce unwanted pregnancies.

West Dunbartonshire’s Nine Months After features young parents revealing how children changed their lives. Secondary pupils in the authority are shown the DVD as part of their personal and social education.

Health Minister Andy Kerr said that, despite substantial improvements to sexual health services, sexually transmitted infections were still increasing, and he urged parents to encourage their children to talk openly to them about relationships and sex. “We all need to take more responsibility for our own sexual health,” he said. Syphilis has re-emerged in Scotland and gonorrhoea, chlamydia and HIV rates are now at record levels. This must be tackled.”
