Citizen Power. Channel 4 Tuesdays, until November 25, 11.25-11.50am.

There are three new units in this interactive series for 10 to 14-year-olds fronted by Jon Snow and linked to the C4 website (www.channel4.comcitizenpower). Dealing with war and peace, crime and punishment and the media, they are meant not only to encourage students to consider the issues and express their own views on them, but also to participate actively through online debate.

English. BBC2 Tuesday, September 30 until Thursday October 2, 12am-4am.

English is the subject of the week again on BBC2‘s slot for overnight recording, with the emphasis on language for younger secondary school pupils. On Wednesday, Writers’ Block, a five-parter on literacy skills, emphasises the link between writing and reading. It is followed at the same time in the early hours of Wednesday, October 1 by KS3 Curriculum Bites, illustrating how writing skills are applied to different curriculum subjects. Finally, this week, on Thursday, October 2, for 14 to 16-year-olds, we return to literature with In Context, six programmes providing information on the social and historical background to set texts: An Inspector Calls, Lord of the Flies, Animal Farm, Journey’s End, To Kill a Mockingbird and Of Mice and Men.

Famous People with Magic Grandad. BBC2 Fridays, October 3-17, 10.35-10.50am.

This evening sees the last of the repeated Toys with Magic Grandad, as the “Watch” history strand for five to seven-year-olds goes back to Victorian times and discovers how children used to amuse themselves. Next Friday, Magic Grandad takes the children on a new adventure, discovering the lives of famous people: Florence Nightingale, George Stephenson, Christopher Columbus and Pocahontas. The BBC website www.bbc.co.ukschoolsfamouspeople includes information about these famous four, together with simple quizzes.

New Scientist TV. Discovery Channel Tuesdays, until November 11, 8pm, 9.05pm, 10.15pm, 11.20pm.

The Discovery Channel is doing its own “science clips” in September and October with these five-minute bulletins - made in association with the journal New Scientist - which highlight the science stories behind the day’s headlines.
