Some of Scotland’s emerging talent can be seen at Craiglockhart in Edinburgh next week when the East of Scotland Junior Champion-ships begin on May 24.

The East of Scotland Lawn Tennis Association, which is hosting the championships until June 3, has noticed an upsurge in interest in local schools. At the recent Scottish Open Championships, they held an indoor clinic for which 836 youngsters signed up from 21 different schools.

By working closely with Active Schools’ co-ordinators, the association spread its net wider than before and schools from Edinburgh, Fife, Midlothian and as far afield as Renfrew took part. The children were given an hour’s free coaching in mini-tennis activities and fun games to give them an introduction to the sport.

There was also the chance to watch some of Europe’s up-and-coming players taking part in the Scottish Opens.
