100 Great Black Britons
Observing that no one of colour made it to the Top 100 in the Great Britons vote, EveryGeneration founder Patrick Vernon, and Nubian Jak, creator of the educational game "Black Trivial Pursuit", decided a whole new voting process highlighting the history of the black community in Britain would help develop an overdue celebration of unsung heroes who have contributed to the political, social and cultural landscape of the nation over the past 1000 years. Do pupils know that Battersea had a black mayor in the 1900s or that Queen Victoria's grandmother, Queen Charlotte, was mixed race?
As well as voting categories including science, politics, spirituality, arts, sport and business, among others, there will be an all-time international category for voters' favourite black person ever.
The 100 Black Britons website will be launched on October 1, at the start of Black History Month, and the campaign and voting will be open until January 1 2004.
