12-point checklist of best practices

6th February 1998 at 00:00
* A 12-point checklist of best practices in the teaching, learning and management of key skills in colleges was published by the Further Education Funding Council this week.

Drawing on evidence gained in the first four-year inspection cycle which ended last autumn, it concludes that all good colleges have a comprehensive policy on promoting numeracy and literacy which applies to all departments.

A strategy for implementing those practices is backed by active support from senior managers, with clear procedures for the initial assessment of all students and adequate support for all individuals.

Support and teaching are linked closely to mainstream studies, backed by a central resource unit, with regular monitoring of individual progress. Appropriate accreditation and certificatres are awarded to encourage progress and opportunities are created by the senior management to all staff to share good practice.
