A painting by an unknown 16th-century Flemish artist is the focus of an exhibition - "The Measurers: a Flemish Image of Mathematics in the Sixteenth Century" - running until December 15 at the Museum of the History of Science, Broad Street, Oxford. It shows an instrument maker surrounded by the products of his trade and a series of vignettes applying geometry to music, weighing, gauging barrels, surveying and measuring grain and cloth. The exhibition has sections on each of these topics and an area devoted to important Flemish mathematicians of the time. Free admission. For details, tel: 01865 277280.
