A serious shortage of trained professional staff faces the youth and community service in Scotland. During the next five years, it is estimated 1,000 vacancies will have to be filled, many of them in new posts connected with building projects now maturing or to meet a growing demand in existing establishments and organisations.

* Times Newspapers Limited intend to launch a weekly newspaper for higher education. Mr Brian MacArthur, a former education correspondent of The Times, will be the editor, and he will work in close association with Mr Stuart Maclure, editor of The TES.
