A union that's in a league of its own

22nd October 2004 at 01:00
Hurrah for the Association of Teachers and Lecturers! After much hard negotiation the union has finally forced the Government to rename the league tables from "performance tables" to the "achievement and attainment tables". We rang up the ATL to find out exactly what exactly is the difference of meaning between "performance", "achievement" and "attainment". "Can I get back to you on that?" the press officer said.

A day later we learned that "performance" asserts "unhelpful nuances about what schools actually do" whereas "achievement" and "attainment" are quite different things entirely. Phew! What would we do without them?
