Abolish TTA and give to GTC

29th June 2001 at 01:00
Tim Brighouse's suggestion that the Teacher Training Agency should be abolished and its powers handed to the General Teaching Council (TES, June 15) is well made, and one the Liberal Democrats fully support.

We first advocated such a proposal in our manifesto before the general election. Only when the profession, rather than a quango full of government bureaucrats is in charge of the training and development will the status of teaching be raised. The pound;6 million running costs of the TTA could be diverted to help fund the running costs of the GTC - reducing the need the charge teachers a fee.
