Admissions plea

Local authorities must determine school admissions instead of the present lottery system, argues the National Union of Teachers.

The councils must also have the power to end selection in the country's remaining grammar schools, Doug McAvoy, the NUT's general secretary, said. The Government has proposed ballots of parents on the right to remain selective.
