Further to our item last week on how North Ayrshire is keeping tabs on staff, we are happy to clarify matters. We reported how one headteacher, in line with what he thought was council policy, was asking teachers to sign a register each time they left and returned to school.

The council explains that its instructions were to do with "special leave" such as extended absences, which were expected to be duly detailed and recorded. For some reason, one school took leave to mean leaving the building. A course in interpretational skills is being arranged.
