It had all the glitz and glamour of the Oscars - but teachers were the stars at last week's Welsh teaching awards 2005, in Cardiff's city hall, when they collected their Platos.

Drama teacher Ruth Williams won the Guardian award for secondary teacher of the year (see story above). Outstanding newcomerwas former wine-merchant-turned-secondary-school teacher Phil Jones, from Eirias high school in Colwyn Bay. Winner of the lifetime achievement award, head Allan Evans, from Queen Elizabeth Cambria comprehensive, Carmarthen, joked: "I think this award is a hint that it's time to retire."

During the coming weeks, TES Cymru will be profiling not only these outstanding teachers but all the Welsh winners: teaching assistant Sharon Bowen, Ysgol Dinas Bran, Llangollen; Julia Buckley-Jones, Ysgol Gwaenynog infants, Denbigh, for working with business and community; Ysgol Gynradd Gymraeg Caerffili, Caerphilly, for healthy schools; secondary head Alun Griffiths, Cefn Saeson comprehensive, Neath; primary head Peter Jones, St David's Church in Wales school, Cardiff; primary teacher Valerie Luxton, Model VA primary, Carmarthen; teaching assistant Liz Norman, Moorland primary, Cardiff; Morwel Palmer, Spittal VC primary, Haverfordwest, for Welsh language; and special-needs teacher Meinir Rees, Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg Plasmawr, Cardiff.
