I am writing in support of John Hancox's letter ("A fruitful letter", 16 December). Our pupils are in the early stages of creating a small school orchard and great learning has already taken place, even before the trees have been delivered.
Talking, listening and problem-solving skills have emerged during debates on how to best use a piece of land in our grounds, whether to use it for play equipment or an orchard, and pupils are considering the advantages and disadvantages of each.
Planting fruit trees not only involves the obvious science areas, it also involves biodiversity, the seasons, weather, and develops responsibility for Earth's resources, as well as health and well-being. This brings about positive changes in school and promotes healthy lifestyles, it also offers scope for language, maths and the expressive arts.
