A teacher who assaulted two of his teenage pupils has resigned. John Berryman, 43, head of biology at Newtown high school, Powys, pleaded guilty to common assault at Aberystwyth magistrates court last October. A spokesman for the county council confirmed that Berryman resigned last month and that an internal investigation will not now go ahead.

The case is being referred to the General Teaching Council for Wales.
