Assistant director suspended

OFFICIALS from Scottish Borders have confirmed that John Taylor, the council's assistant director of education in charge of finance, has been suspended.

But the authority is adamant that this has nothing to do with the education department's budget overspend for the last financial year, which is now being investigated by a working group of five councillors.

A spokeswoman would not confirm reports that he overspend has reached pound;4 million. "The extent of the overspend is what is being investigated," she said.

John Christie, director of education, said several areas of education spending were "well in excess of the agreed budget" but added that projected overspends had been regularly reported to the education committee and there was no truth in reports that money was "missing" or unaccounted for.
