A new science teachers' bursary scheme has been launched by BAE Systems, which runs until December 2007. Around 25 fully-funded bursaries worth pound;40,000 will be awarded to enable teachers to attend the National Science Learning Centre in York. The NSLC is part of a network of centres offering residential courses aimed at supporting teachers in their efforts to increase the take-up of science and engineering courses at post-16 and degree level. www.baesystems.comeducation;

Educational establishments in the UK and Republic of Ireland are invited to make submissions, by February 24, for the Rolls-Royce Science Prize, an annual awards scheme with a two-year rolling programme. Designed to help reverse the decline in take-up of science subjects, it requires small teams of adults, led by a practising teacher, to devise a science-teaching proposal for their school or college. In its second year, short-listed teams will be awarded grants plus a specialist mentor's support to implement their proposals over two terms. The winning team receives pound;15,000 to invest in science education and a day out with the Red Arrows, with pound;10,000 going to the runners-up. Tel: 0800 028 0759;
