Awards for global awareness

The TES today launches a pound;21,000 award scheme to recognise British schools that have developed innovative links with schools in other countries.

The Make the Link Awards will reward schools and colleges that have used their overseas links to promote global citizenship, enrich the curriculum, and enhance life in both schools.

There are four main awards, sponsored by the HSBC bank and supported by the British Council, worth a total of pound;16,000 this year and four runners-up prizes of pound;1,000-pound;1,500 each.

School prizes include the pound;5,000 International School of the Year Award, for which schools have to demonstrate a wide range of links across a number of subjects and age groups; a pound;3,500 World Link Award for the best single non- European link; and a pound;2,500 European Link Award.

There is also a pound;5,000 International FE College of the Year award for sixth-form or further education colleges.

The awards are designed to encourage schools and colleges to make lasting, mutually beneficial links in which they undertake joint curriculum and citizenship projects, share teaching expertise and add an international dimension to schoolcollege life.

Judith Judd, TES editor, said: "This is an opportunity to reward some of the pioneering partnerships that are being forged across the world by British schools and are making an extraordinary impact on pupils and staff."

Dame Mary Richardson, chief executive of the HSBC Education Trust, said the sponsorship of the awards was an exciting element of HSBC's global support for encouraging international understanding. "Such links will broaden the outlook of young people and promote global citizenship."

Entrants will be asked to say how they would use the prize money to extend links further, which could include staff and pupil visits overseas.
