Once again, the soft target for spending cuts is the adult sector as further education colleges have been forced to reduce provision.
Recreational courses have been axed as well as such "luxuries" as day schools from vocational courses. Opportunities for retraining and addressing skills shortages are some of the clear benefits of vocational adult classes, something one would expect such a utilitarian government to grasp.
Clearly, it is asking too much of ministers to see that recreational classes fulfil valuable functions, such as keeping the elderly sound in body and soul and giving adults of all ages a chance to develop and enjoy learning for its own sake.
If we were short of money, the case for cuts might be justified, but the 3-18 sector is awash with funding. It is unforgiveable. Give us back our classes!
