Basics backed

The Education and Employment Secretary, Gillian Shephard, has maintained her return to the language of educational basics with the announcement that grammar, punctuation and spelling are to be given a greater emphasis in the national curriculum tests for 14-year-olds.

"Only if we test these elements rigorously can we ensure that they will be properly covered in the classroom," she said.
