SO YOU thought Beacon Schools were just another meaningless Government scheme to give a puff to some of Chris Woodhead's mates? Think again - they really do produce results.

The scene: a meeting for beacon heads. The Diary's flapping ears catch a DFEE official quizzing a head on the benefits of beaconship. "Well, house prices have gone up," replies the head. "Marvellous," says the official.
